How Is a Fragrance Built?
Top, Heart & Base
The fragrance pyramid is a simple way to read the movement from the opening to the heart and then the base.
Top Notes
The first impression: light, volatile materials such as bergamot, lemon and herbs. They arrive quickly, then make room for the rest of the structure.
Heart Notes
The fragrance’s personality: florals, spices and green materials that become clearer after the opening settles.
Base Notes
The lasting trace: woods, amber, musk, vanilla and oud. These slower-moving materials give the fragrance depth and memory.
How should we read it?
Do not treat the pyramid as a precise clock; layers overlap and change with formula, skin, heat and humidity. Try the fragrance on skin and wait for the base before judging it.
